You will also get to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the area. The views along the way are simply stunning, with the possibility of seeing other islands in the distance. This guided hike is an unforgettable experience that will make your holiday in La Palma unforgettable. The Volcano Route trail along Cumbre Vieja is the most incredible hike through the GR 131 in La Palma.
The volcanoes trail of La Palma crosses the main volcano area of the canary island, and it´s the home of the last volcanic eruption , Volcano Cumbre Vieja. From El Refugio del Pilar to Fuencaliente.
During the magnificent hike in La Palma, the volcano landscape shows plenty of colour contrasts, from the green of the Canarian pines, the black lava trails and yellow-reds and brown oxidation tones of volcanic terrains. 17,1km of new and amazing landscape.
This tour in La Palma follows the volcanic ridge that divides the south of La Palma into two sides, east and west. Our hiking tour through the volcanoes ridge trail allows you to hike above the clouds most of the time like this we can contemplate the incredible views of the islands and other islands also like Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.
El Pilar is a famous pic nic area for the local Palmeros. By the refuge building starts this trail along the GR131. It starts going up through a pine forest to the south-west. Very quickly gains elevation and as the trail goes higher the vegetation is poorer. By 1800m there are only a few pine trees challenging the heavy winds.
The path then goes around Birigoyo volcano following the gr131, at this point we will be ablo to see some amazing views of our new volcano crater in La Palma, this volcano erupted only in the month of September and lots of lave flew down to the coast until mid december 2021 and slowly goes up even more until it reaches La Deseada. Before Las Deseadas we will see other crater formation like Hoyo Negro and Duraznero, two volcanoes that erupted in 1942.
By the time we get to the highest point of this tour, Las Deseadas, almost half of this volcano hike will be gone. At least the hardest part for some.
The way down to Fuencaliente alogn the GR 131
From Las Deseadas to Volcan Martín will be a nice and easy path down. The landscape and amazing mountain relief make this part of the hike one of the most unique places of the Canary Islands. This area could be on a sunny day very exposed to the sun as well so be sure of bringing enough water during summer period.
